EDWARD L. LOOMIS
W7AHI
At 7:09, on Tuesday evening, November 14, the last page turned and the book closed on the life of Ed. A native of Seattle, he came into this life, the son of Martin and Helen Rhebhan Loomis, on September 15, 1918. He was a graduate of Roosevelt High and attended the University of Washington, mining program where he turned out for the rowing crew. Prior to World War II, he served two summers in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Alaska. He served in World War II, helping to establish teletype communications, which evolved into the DEW line in Alaska and was honorably discharged in 1948 with the rank of Sergeant, First Class.
After receiving his electricians’ license, he returned to Alaska to pursue a career that was highlighted in 1975 when he was appointed Superintendent of all electrical camps for the building of the Alaskan pipeline. He retired in 1985 and kept active with trips to Alaska, gardening, Ham radio, and walks in the family woods near Big Lake. He remained active till 1995, when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Though he fought hard, the disease finally became insurmountable and the last couple years of his life were spent in a full care facility. In his final hours, his body struggled for life, but the man we knew had long ago departed
